Last fall, before my seizure and its built-in yardwork alibi, I was outside raking some leaves one Saturday afternoon, listening to my iPod. I found myself nodding along and kind of jamming to a song I didn't recognize -- the iPod was set to shuffle -- so I stopped and looked to see who it was. Oh my god -- or omg, as the girls would say -- I was accidentally enjoying a song by Aly & AJ, the tween-appealing, bubblerocking sister act that Gina and Franny were wild about at the time. Yike.
OK, flash forward to this afternoon. I'm walking up to the lab for my weekly blood draw, again listening to my iPod, but this time I'm taking no chances. It's a very sober Fresh Air podcast about the relationship between Bobby Kennedy and J. Edgar Hoover.
At the end of the interview, a guest critic comes on to review, seriously, the new CD by Aly & AJ. And he likes it! He goes on about how original and energetic and genre-breaking the sisters are, and quotes with delight the hook from their new opening cut:
"This is the potential breakup song/Our album needs just one."
Man.
Watch the video here if you dare.
Next week, I'm sure, Terry Gross will rhapsodize about the design excellence of American Eagle tops and Hollister jeans. If I haven't broken up with her by then.

hey I like it. It reminds me of the guy "zap" who sang "I heard it through the grapevine" back in the 70's - 80's, I liked that way better, much more catchy, but they use the same effect.
Hey man, what keeps the Fresh Air fresher than hot sister pop stars with girl-power break up songs? I dig it. And I dig that song too -- though I might hate you later for telling me about it. I think it might be destined for my pod.
Speaking of guilty pleashuhs: Way back in 2005, when Val and I were in Italy, I had a Pop Fantastic moment of my own, listening to all that euro-dance stuff on the hotel MTV -- the result: Rihanna's Pon da Replay and Sugababes Push the Button on my iTunes.
Gotta love that crunchy candy center!
Rihanna I know. I'll check out the Sugababes; good name.
Kay, you'd probably like Lady Sovereign. Kind of a nasty, dancey, rappy British girl. She's got it going on.
"I can't dance and I really can't sing. I can only do one thing and that's be Lady Sovereign."
And also:
"If you like me, thank you. If you hate me, fuck you."
Sugababes: hot chicks with just enough melody to keep you listening. Fine by me.
Also, from Lady S:
"So everybody's entitled to opin-i-ons, I open my mouth and shit I've got mill-i-ons."
