Make the Pie Higher!

In lieu of the morning news meeting I was clicking around this morning, looking at a couple of blogs I haven't read before. One I ran across is TJ Sullivan in LA -- pretty good; he's a contributor to one of my favorites, LA Observed -- and he found an excuse to reprint this poem, which is composed entirely of quotes uttered by President Bush.

Says Sullivan:

Snopes.com says the arrangement is "generally credited to Washington Post writer Richard Thompson, a satirist and illustrator who produces the 'Richard's Poor Almanac' feature appearing in the Post's Sunday edition:"Here's the poem:

Make the Pie Higher
I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen and uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the Internet become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish can coexist.
Families is where our nation finds hope, where our wings take dream.

Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher! Make the pie higher!

funny. my favorite line was I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity, but wikipedia says its the only line in the poem that hasn't been verified as a bushism.

True.

The snopes.com link on the post goes to their investigation, with cites, of all the quotes. It's a pretty good read in itself.

That pantleg of oppotunity thing was from the Molly Ivins book about Bush, and it appears she might have made it up. Good one though.
