The West Seattle Blog alerted us that they started tearing down the Hancock Fabrics and the Shuck's Auto store today. They're building a Whole Foods and some other stuff in there. Just down the street they're building a new ginormous apartment building, and a block from that they're building another ginormous apartment/retail building where the Super Supplements, Funky Janes and some of the shops now are.
Also right across the street from this Hanckock Fabrics, I think some other ginormous thing is going in where the auto dealer used to be. Sounds like thousands of new residents and cars showing up all at once. Makes me shiver to think of the commute a year from now. Right now it takes me 12 minutes to get to work. I'm guessing it'll be 45 minutes by this time next year.

sorry to hear that. population density will go up, traffic density will go up, bummer. When we lived in Metairie in 1978 I could drive to work in 15 to 20 minutes, by the time I came back in 1998 it took an hour. Since Katrina things had got much worse with way more traffic.

I live in Illahee, which is about five miles north of Bremerton, out toward Poulsbo.
My favorite route to the north is blocked by a road washout from last December that still hasn't been fixed. Not a thing has been done to heal this 200-foot-wide, 50-foot-deep gaping rip in the earth. And nothing will until September ... you know, just when the rainy season starts again. Government efficiency at its finest.
Near the Kitsap Sun building, where I work in downtown Bremerton, several of the main streets have been torn up for more than a year to clear way for an underground tunnel that will carry Bremerton-Seattle traffic out of downtown. It won't be ready until next spring. Meanwhile, Mayor Cary Bozeman continues to literally bulldoze his vision of aggressive progress on the area, and old building are being imploded and bulldozed in every direction.
I guess I'm OK with that as long as we get one decent pub that stays open after deadline. That's probably too much to ask, though.
