Merry Christmas from Bing and Bowie

If you've never seen this you've got to check it out. If so, you know it's one of the all-time classics, maybe the best Christmas duet ever. From Bing Crosby's Christmas Special in 1977, 30 years ago.

Man, David Bowie was young.

I love this blog. And you gotta love YouTube too. Did you see it when it aired? I did. the Bowie albums of 1977: Low and Heroes

PS -- Val and I took a break from killing evil virtual French Templars in an incredibly detailed Hi-Def virtual Holy Land to stand with wine in hand and watch this little holiday show -- it was sweet. thanks!!

This is one of my all-time faves. I listen to the song on CD a lot, but haven't seen the video in years. It's even more moving. Thanks!

p.s. I'm still in Eugene, and Mom and I just watched this together! Merry Christmas, everyone.

Wow, it's so cool to have everyone sitting around watching the same little clip, all on our little blog.

I love this song, and yes, Kaye, I absolutely remember watching it when it came out. YouTube also has a clip of Bowie singing Heroes, also on that Bing special, but I haven't watched that one yet.

Okay you old guys, of course my first thought was "I remember watching it when it aired." I heard in later interviews that Bing had no idea who David Bowie was, and when he came on the set with eye make-up and his boyish good looks Bing thought Bowie was a girl. Funny that the banter made of point of mentioning Bowie had a six year old son,. I think that was to protect the impressionable youth of 70's America. Thanks for getting all holiday nostalgic, it what makes the season shine. Have a great Feast Day and Happy New Year!

I'm going to try this comment again to take out the worst of the typos:

Sorry, I sort of dropped out for a few days. I love the clip and have used it to get into the christmas spirit. My law firm just moved Friday, our long term managing partner died in April and in September we imployed, splitting essentially into two firms. I thought my sore shoulder was perfect for getting out of lots of the moving, but due to frustration, I've managed to do everything from help install the dishwasher to hang pictures. I'm living on aleve and ice bags. (Plus I smashed my index finger on the arm that works in a car door so I've lost torque on both sides.) Anyway, I jumped out of bed this morning to go in and unload some files and Andy reminded me of holiday activities. It's taken several hours but I'm leaving the I-got-to-keep-moving feeling behind and getting into the holidays. Andy's sons are coming over tonight for dinner, gifts and games (of the board variety). Tomorrow we go to Lexington to see his parents and sisters. Tuesday, we go to my sister's to have the frantic, young children at christmas experience. This will also be a transition from pizza and beer on the run to three days of long, well cooked family meals.

Janice, thanks for the update. Sounds like you need an M&M lesson in how to slow the hell down. Especially after surgery! I'm an expert at this point, maybe I should write a book.

And Laurie, thanks for the trivia on the Bing & Bowie special. I thought that stranger/neighbor thing was just a cheesy put-on. It's funnier if it was true.

Great tune either way.

hey that was nice. I haven't' heard either one of them sing in many many years, and didn't realize they had ever sung together. Merry Christmas to all from me.

I too remember this when it first aired. watching it now shows how much TV has changed over the years. How sad that we are STILL waiting to learn how to live in peace. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share this with Christin - it is beautiful. Merry Christmas to all!
